The lake which the name Lake Oswego refers to isn’t available to boat on for all… Oswego Lake is a private lake.

A lot of people moving to Portland or moving to Lake Oswego don’t always know this. Now, there are some court filings trying to change that, but it will most likely stay private for a number of reasons. In order to get on the lake in your boat you will need to become a shareholder and purchase on of the Lake Oswego waterfront homes for sale or join an easement. There are 20 Lake Oswego easements which provide deeded access to 3000 homes in the city.

A home can have deeded rights to more than one easement and residents from that home are allowed to join any and/or all of the Oswego Lake easements that are deeded to their home or they can join none.

A little more detail from the Lake Corp:

LOC owns 20 lakeside properties, Easements, that supply deeded lake access privileges to over 3,000 homeowners in the surrounding area. Each easement is governed by its own individual set of by-laws and has its own volunteer board of directors. Facilities and rate structures vary from easement to easement. Call our offices to get confirmation of your property’s eligibility and to find out which easement(s) you are entitled to join.

Lake Oswego Oregon: “Fore” Reasons to Live Here

The Oswego Lake Country Club and surrounding Lake Oswego neighborhoods

Lake Oswego Living

If you are interested in Lake Oswego real estate, then you are usually interested in golfing, schools, boating, or all three. The Country Club is a huge asset to the community and the desirability of living here. Tucked in around the towering evergreen trees and off Country Club Road in the North Shore – Country Club District is The Oswego Lake Country Club. Walking distance from FIRST ADDITION Neighborhood.

Since 1924 the Oak trees, Douglas Fir and Maple trees have provided paradise for golfers on the par 71 course. Skill and golf pride is truly felt in the fairways at OLCC. The Audubon Society recognized this club with the award for responsible stewardship. There are real grass practice grounds at the driving range with target greens. The practice bunkers and the short-game practice area is all professional. U.S. Amateur Champion Chandler Egan designed the original golf course and there’s no doubt he put a tremendous amount of thought into creating OLCC. Mr. Egan also played a vital part in reworking the links at Pebble Beach back in 1922 and most of us know PB is on most golfers short list to play one day.

Oswego Lake Club membership is an important part of maintaining the quality of play at OLCC. Golf course maintenance is not inexpensive. A large staff is paramount in assisting that everything come together. Please contact the club office for more details on membership but here’s a brief outline. The social membership allows members to use club dining facilities, swimming pool, snack bars and participate in club functions. This level of membership allows use of the driving range and practice facilities and social status invites you to compete in in two-ball events. Proprietary membership opens up members to full club access! The course and range are available to use and there are voting privileges on initiatives that are raised by the club board and its committees. All facilities, events and amenities including junior programs are open to OLCC members at the proprietary level.

Oswego Lake Country ClubOLCC prints a member news magazine called TEE TALK. It highlights events on the club calendar and is a showcase for Men’s and Woman’s Club Champion and Senior Champions with pictures of winners. The magazine also features letters from the club president and reports from the greens department. Here, Golf Course Superintendent Bob Senseman can share his experience on water drainage issues, course sand and divot action and seeding the grass. Another important aspect of fairway playability is the schedule for verifying the course and closures while the grounds settle back down. To many folks this is to much talk about dirt and grass and to the golfers following closely it makes a lot of sense and we take pride in the conditions of the club. Monthly dues are important as well as the costs for capital improvement. Over the years alterations have been made to Oswego Lake Country Club. The course changed in dramatic ways in the 1950’s when the layout was updated. New tees are added in 1993 and fairways were improved to allow better drainage. Greens were enhanced and remain fast and near highest standards in the sport. What a great place to play where you live.

The CC motto is Live Where You Play and for 90 years members have called the OLCC an extension of their own homes. The clubhouse has museum quality golf memorabilia displayed within the landmarks walls. The property promotes comfort and class without being uptight and closed minded. In order to continue the success of these standards there are accommodating membership rates for applicants under age 39. This approach to membership promotes generations of contact with Lake Oswego’s pride in golf. Please contact Tiffany Smith the membership assistant to learn more about the comforts OLCC offers. She can be reached at 503.636.3631.

Stafford Hamlet in PDX

Stafford Hamlet in Oregon’s Portland Area:

If you’re researching Hamlet the idea of a country subdivision is probably not what you’re thinking. Hamlets in Oregon are similar to villages and these are subnational entities that manage themselves as a local government. Look at West Linn as the comanding force in regards to Stafford, Oregon. This is done so the area can run things for themselves as a smaller unit to make decisions easier and quicker for people to run the land. This  community is a model of local government and a village or hamlet is referred to as a community planning organization (CPOs). The purpose of CPO’s is to involve the communities citizens in land use planning in the unincorporated county. An unincorporated area is a region of land administered as part of a bigger administrative division and not governed by its own local municipal corporation. There are four examples of this in Oregon and the hamlets are are known as MulinoBeavercreekMolalla Prairie and Stafford.

Stafford is classified as a hamlet with about 2,200 residents when last counted. This area is approximately 3,900 acres and west of West Linn, South of Lake Oswego and east of Tualatin. A renowned Portland, Oregon pioneer by the name of George A. Steel named Stafford after Stafford, Ohio which was his hometown. In 1892 the Stafford School opened in this community and the following year the Eastside Electric Railway rolled into the area. Urban growth contributed to the area being added to Portland’s boundary in 1995 however in 2006 Stafford became a hamlet as residents voted to do so after fighting with Oregon’s Court of Appeals to not include 830 acres as part of Portland.

A Little About Lake Oswego’s First Addition Neighborhood History:

For starters the FIRST ADDITION neighborhood of Lake Oswego plays an important role in our history. In order to get to know the quaint architecture take the guided walking tour so you can see the different styles. Buildings like craftsman, gothic, colonial revival and vernacular and English cottage. The Lake Oswego Chamber of Commerce provides maps to explore. Back in 1847 Oswego was founded by Albet Alonzo Durham who was inspired by Oswego, New York to name our area.

The first Lake Oswego, Oregon industry was a sawmill on Sucker Creek. In 1878 the Oswego Iron Company was created when purchased from the original owners that discovered iron ore in the Tualatin Valley. The railroad was laid down through Oswego in 1886 which led to development and hundreds of workers settling here to work at the Oswego Iron and Steel Company. This industry quickly developed our region and neighborhoods like First Addition became home to people investing in entrepreneurial ventures. An opera house was created and churches, general stores, banks, saloons, drug stores and hotels were constructed to settle Lake Oswego. Today, homeowners in First Addition enjoy strolling to the Lake Oswego PUBLIC LIBRARY and the famous farmers market. Neighbors walk to grocery stores and restaurants and Millennium Plaza Park is really close. Here children can play in water fountains and on grass fields while folks watch boaters out cruising Oswego Lake.
